Learn more about Dentures
There are two types of dentures, complete and partial. Both types are removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth and some surrounding tissue. Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing in the upper or lower jaw, where as partial dentures are used to replace several missing teeth and prevent shifting of existing natural teeth. Other reasons for dentures include:
- Supporting facial tissues
- Improve speaking and eating habits
- Returning a smile to a patient with missing teeth
The process of fabricating a removable dental appliance takes several appointments. Your doctor will start by taking highly accurate molds (impressions) of your soft tissues (gums) and recording measurements required to make your custom denture. Several “try-in” appointments may be needed to ensure proper fit, shape and function before the denture is finalized.
At the final appointment you doctor will precisely adjust your denture to ensure a comfortable fit. The doctor will provide home care instructions and with proper cleaning, diligent oral hygiene, and regular dental visits, your new denture can provide many years chewing, speaking, and smiling!
